Actually, if you'll notice on eBay there is a new "cottage" industry of folks selling handmade ones.  If you like to sew, you might want to consider making a blanket with novelty fabric of one of the child's other favorites (i.e. Sponge Bob, Hannah Montana).  I don't know where to find an actual pattern for them but IMO, it would be something to consider.
