Yeddai petition to end harassment

YEDDAI PETITION TO END HARASSMENT We, the undersigned Yeddai, hereby publicly petition Yedda.com to allow us to protect ourselves from cyber-stalking and public harassment. We insist that certain changes be made to the site: 1) People posting questions will have the ability to delete all responses at their discretion. 2) People answering questions will have the ability to delete any replies directed at them at their discretion. 3) The thumbs ranking system will be overhauled in one or more of several ways: a) Only the person asking the question can apply thumbs up or down. b) All thumbs down must be accompanied by a reason posted to the moderator. c) Abolishment of the thumbs rating system altogether. If no progress is made in meeting our demands by March 15, 2009, we will cease contact with the site. Signers, please keep your remarks brief. Discussion is open on this petition at this blog: http://yedda.com/questions/Anti-harassment_petition_discussion_6279918761790/

Love is the battery of life....

ProfitBob my friend, ------- I am in complete agreemant with you. However I am not sure it will help. To destroy something is always easier than to build (that's a law in Thermodynamics). They who want to destroy will find original ways to do it. By the way, right now, there is a massive attack on my "thumbs up" account.... within the last hour I received 20 thumbs down..... Untill you'll read my notes, it will go down more..... -------- Best personal regards,

I agree and I disagree, Bob. I thought about your response to my earlier comment in another question, and you are right in that people should be able to delete what they don't want to see, however, I still feel that even if contrary opinions upset the poster, there are many others who read the question and benefit from the advice whether positive or negative. This brings up the idea of "question ownership". Do you actually own your question?? If I ask a question, can I manipulate others to adhere to my desired response, or should the question belong to the site once it is posted. I think that the negative thumbs should be gone, and I think that anyone who appreciates an answer should be allowed to award others with this high praise. But, I think that the profanity and vulgar responses should be eliminated. I wish that there could be volunteers to monitor the site if Yedda cannot keep up with the responsibility. I once offered to look out for the kids on this site, because you cannot get to their profiles and most people don't understand that if you don't have a profile of any klind you are between the ages of 13 and 18. I was turned down. I would be willing to act in this capacity to better the site. Perhaps if there were others willing to do the same??

I agree and I disagree as well , I personally do not feel that ditching Yedda is the answer.  Here's some more thoughts .... Remove the thumbs down option all together or you give a thumbs down , it leaves your name .  We continue to help Yedda moderate the site .  I do not agree with a delete button .  If someone posts an answer it should be posted , regardless to who agrees or disagrees with it . Excluding personal attacks . For an example , If Yedda poster X submits an opinion and Yedda poster Y doesn't agree they should not have the ability to delete X's answer , regardless to if they ask the question or not .  I agree 100% that Yedda needs to do their job better than they have in the past .

I vote for option C. Period. The other delete options offer too much control based on opinion. I see an unending feud when everyone has the power to delete. You can still give approval with a short post to that person.

To be honest, I enjoy seeing a few thumbs up in my box. Who can disagree. But nobody comes to Yedda because of the cool thumbs ranking system. At first, they come here to field a question or a thought. Only after becoming familiar with the game do they realize what this "thumb thing" is and how it works. Before you know it, thumb lust sets in. "And if your thumb causes you to stumble, pluck it off and throw it from you..."

My answers to thumbs ratio is quite close, which is the desired effect. My posts in the past have been received poorly. I have been soundly thrashed by the thumbs down mutant. I have deleted most of my own posts out of pure shame. However, I agree with Profitbob on this point... it is through the wisdom of advice and consistent answers that have built Yedda to where it is now. And the man from New Orleans... about the money end of it. The outcome of this will not effect the profits and losses line at the bottom of the page. UNLESS they are looking at all this as "any publicity is good publicity". It has caused a stir and people are watching the grunts down here in the trenchs fight amongst themselves...to see whether or not the outcome will put cash in their wallets.

Again, thank you all for replying and posting so quickly.  Everybody has valid concerns, and of course the petition as I have written it is not perfect.  I am not holding out for anything but some type of forward progress by Yedda to return this site to sanity.  I think the person posting a question owns that question, just as when I write a book, or article, I hold all rights until someone pays for them.  I also think that they have granted Yedda use of that question.  That is why I didn't press for the ability to delete a question, which we used to have, for those of you who have been here long enough to remember that.  OronD should be able to bear me out on this.  I just want for the asker to have the power to moderate their own blog (the same way myspace and other sites operate).

I grant that valid information will be lost.  BUT, it is being lost now every time we don't answer a question due to harassment.  It is lost every time some Yeddai walks away, rather than put up being treated badly by someone with an attitude.  Plus, a whole other layer of misinformation is piling up that can't be removed.  What use is that?  How many advertisements have you seen posted as answers?

I post to a lot of medical questions.  How dangerous do you think bad information is there?  Should it stay forever?

I agree that ditching Yedda is a bad option.  But I don't have anything to bargain with other than withholding my knowledge.  As much as I like to share it here on Yedda, I am sure that I have other venues in which spread knowledge.  Yedda is a noble experiment.  There is a lot more that it could do to spread knowledge around the world, and I would like to be a part of that.  But if it is just going to become another AOL property run for a buck on my back, I have no problem with walking away.   Yedda is a source of fun and enjoyment for me, and it is also a deadly serious undertaking, with lives hanging in the balance.  It is not about money to me, and if the corporate owners are only worried about the bottom line, then we should part ways.

I'm sorry that I don't post an individual reply to every person on this petition.  You all know how I write, long posts like this, packed with information.  I want your posts to stick out, not be buried between mine, and I want people to be able read a variety of thoughts with each page view.  I do have that other question for discussion if you would like to post there.  The link is above, the last line of the petition.

As far as the terms of the petition, this is the best I could come up with.  Nothing is written in stone, or even on paper.  I feel that there are two parts to doing everything.  Knowledge and action.  I took action.  If anyone wants to offer a rewrite, or has actions of their own to take, I am fine with that (heck, I am trying to encourage it).  I just thought that this path would be a quicker one than group thinking the matter.  On the whole we agree that something needs to be done.   On the details, who knows without Yedda itself weighing in.

Be Blessed.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (Love), I am become as a sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vauneth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seekth not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth.

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is (Love) charity.

Profitbob, Thank you for all of your help. You are a true Yeddite.
