Yecch - eggplant pests...

My eggplants were decimated by the most disgusting pest I have ever seen. I first found something that looked like pencil shavings all over the leaves - dark soft things that looked like pencil points. When I turned over the leaves, I found many soft, slimy roundish creatures about the size of a pinky fingernail. The eggplants themselves were deformed. These creepy little things did not touch the tomatoes growing right next to the eggplants. The eggplants are in the trash (tightly sealed!), but I am still wondering what these disgusting things are. Does anyone know? I live in Zone 5, if that helps. Thanks!
