Xanax and Alcohol

Is there any problem with taking Xanax after drinking alcohol, or drinking alcohol after taking Xanax? Does the alcohol change the way the drug works, and could it be dangerous?

Seems like everyone agrees that Alcohol and zanax don't mix. However, I recently started taking zanax for anxiety and take ONLY when I need it. My wife and I enjoy going out one day on the weekend. My question, If I take Friday morning can "should" I drink Sat night. Come on guys, can't a social drinker have some fun. Also, I may take a zanax in the AM and when I get home forom work have a cold one. So far, no problems but again, I just started.

You are so very true! I'm 48 and been taking xanax for along and very painful time, did'nt know how bad I got till I completely lost about 2 weeks of memory and put my husband and kids through hell! You do things that you would never do sober, it's a bad addiction and hard to come off of. My life got worse and your deppresssion gets more insane and parinoid thinking! it ends up intensifying the effects of your panic and deppression, i litterly thought i was going insane and wanted to go in a hospital for the insane and by the grace of god i found the right counseling and she knew right away were to direct me to get help!! It's not anything to take lightly or alittle of, just don't ever go there!!! I know now that I can deal with my life without anything and all though life is just plain hard and uncomfortable at times, I'm managing with the help and hope of others that it's ok to feel and go through it without anything!! I'm still alive and lucky I made it alive and even though I caused more damage and hurt to myself and my husband and kids, my pain now is so much less then the pain I was in with the xanax and drinking and I'm handling it one day at a time with no regrets, I'm really living proof of the bad insane thinking that xanax and drinking can cause and without going into all the detail manage to get myself out before it was to late!! So please, don't think that just even a few times works or you can handle it, thats a big myth as far as i,m concerned its just not reality and people really don't understand how dangerouse xanax is!!!

just my feelings and thoughts!!!!!!

Yes, others' responses are accurate.  Xanax (one of the benzodiazapine drugs) is a central nervous system sedative; similarly, alcohol is a central nervous system sedative.  When you combine the two they create a multiplied or "synergistic" effect which is stronger than either substance taken alone.  Also, combining both substances can cause respiratory arrest - you stop breathing.  The combination is not a good one.  When you said, in your question, "can't a social drinker have some fun" I was alarmed; prescription medications are not to be used for recreation or a good time.  They are prescribed for specific medical or psychiatric conditions.  Please, don't misuse/abuse them. In your question you also stated, "I just started."  For some people, and you may or may not be one of these people, addictive substances such as alcohol and xanax can very slowly and insidiously get out of control despite your good intentions to not abuse them.  Let's face it, no one wakes up one day and says to themselves, "Gee, I think I'll try my hardest to be and addict." It happens gradually without your awareness.  Be very cautious with your use of both substances.  To get a good answer to your particular questions about alcohol, timing and xanax you should talk to your pharmacist or your prescribing professional.  My guess is (if you're not using someone else's Xanax prescription) your professional will advise about the best course of action to keep you healthy - mentally, emotionally and physically.  Happy New Year, Best to you.  D.R.

came across this and i thought i'd ad my comment for anyone still reading it. I used to take sometimes before drinking and you have a complete memory lapse. I was in a fight one particular time and someone threw a bottle at my head and i didnt even feel it, nor have any recollection of these events. Another time my friend told me i had demanded he take me to buy baked beans. Like you're acting out a subconscience thought.  It's not like when you get drunk you wake up the next morning and go, man i was wasted last night, we did some crazy sht. You wake up and go, what the hell happened. Flatline, nothing.

xanax and drinking... lead to blackouts dependnig on the amout you take or drink. i know iv taken the two together before and blacked out. i was at a bar and i eneded up passing out in the bathroom and i woke up the next morning and had no idea where i was. luckly i was at a friends house, but i had to be carried out of the bar and up 3 flights of stairs. talk about embarrasing.

another time i had sex with my best friends boyfriend and dont even remember it happening. i was messed up on the pills and drinks, he wasnt. hes just an a$$hole! i only found out about it because he told his frined and his friend told my friend. and then she asked me about it and i had no idea what she was talking about. he later admitted to me what happen... JERK!!!!!

a different time, the same guy took some xanax and then we all went to the bar, we had to leave 20 mins after we got there because this dude could not even sit up on the bar stool, he kept falling off. we had to leave so the cops wouldnt get us. and on the way home from the bar he started choaking his girlfriend in my car had beathing her, she was in the passenger seat and he was in the back sitting behind her. we kicked him out of the car, and left him. we ended up going back and he was fighting with a fence, and talking crap to some black dudes in this hotel. we got him back in the car to take him home and he started choaking her again. we finally made it to their house and i had to call the cops on him because i though he was gonna kill her. and the he starts beating down his own door to his house, and punching the street. no joke!!!

my advice, dont mix the two. and IF YOU DO. do it in moderation!!!!!!!!!! do NOT take 2mg and go to the bar and get shit faced!
