The road to nowhere is paved with good intentions.

A sense of uselessness about yourself? (watching them suffer)? or a sense of uselessness from the person who is suffering?  Either one, of course will be detrimental to well being. Worry is basically negativity, a poison, like bad energy. I personally believe in the trasference of spirits, both negative and positive. In times of trouble it's important to keep negativity out at all costs!.. It only slows the process of healing. It's so important to Pray for help from God, for His peace.

Worry tends to be a trait that is future oriented....people who worry tend to always be in the 'what if' mode. It certainly can be contributing to your feelings of inadequacy at this time.   You feeling useless is a normal feeling when a loved on is sick.  We have a tendency to want to fix things when our loved ones are in pain...whether it be physical or emotional pain.  I am wondering if you feel more helpless than useless.  You want to help, but don't know what you can do to help.  There may be nothing you can do.  Just being there and giving support with listening and empathy is the only thing you may be able to offer.  That is something that the medical world is very limited in giving.  Try not to be so hard on yourself, however, I know it is an awful feeling that you are experiencing.
