Difficult to answer... Are you talking about active athletes only?

Anyway, I think the list has to include David Beckham, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Michael Schumacher, Mike Tyson, Dale Earnhardt, Karl Lewis... I don't think anyone checked it really.

I'm talking about any athlete ever.  Actually, what inspired the question was this.  The other day i got in an argument with a co-worker about the popularity of track and field worldwide.  He seems to think that a superstar American track and field athlete would be more known than a superstar NFL'er or NBA'er or MLB'er(on a worldwide stage).  I agree that a star Football(or what we Americans call Soccer) player is more known on a worldwide stage, but i don't know if i agree about a star Track and Field athlete?
