I wanted to download the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and I found somewhere that this tool isn't actually installed on the computer. Turns out that it's true, Microsoft say so themselves.
So how can a program work without being installed?
The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool can be also found on the regular microsoft updates. After the installation the program will run on the next powerup of the system. You will not see it - it's very fast and detects few popular malicious softwares (well, maybe you will see it if it detects a malicious software - never had any :))
Microsoft got another tool called "Windows Defender" that acts as an active shield from spywares and such. It got a large database of malicious softwares and I read positive reviews about it (don't have it on my system, but installed it on others). You can get it here for free.
It isn't installed in the traditional sense of an installed program. That is, you won't see Start Menu entries, you won't see it in the Add/Remove Programs menu, etc. It simply extracts itself to a temporary folder, runs itself to completion, then deletes itself once it is finished with its work. In that sense, it is a program that works without being installed.
You can run the program from exe file for more info logon to http://www.oemsoftware.info/
