Using a Widescreen monitor with "square" games WITHOUT a stretched image? (Black bars?)

I have a new widescreen monitor and I want to play older games, such as Baldur's Gate 2 (from 2001), and The Sims 2, and other games without widescreen support (because they were made before widescreen monitors existed).

Is there a way to display a game with the "square" screen that it intended, with black bars at the sides, or some other method that wouldn't cause the picture to be stretched sideways? (I know some people say you'll get used to it, but I don't agree.)

I have a 19" Mag Innovision (1919WDb) monitor at 1440x900, with a ATI Radeon 8500, with a freshly updated driver for the video card.
