I'm interested in:

In my day job I write about Blood Pressure Treatment and treat those who suffer from blood pressure problems. Low blood pressure is a particular interest and I'm often asked about how to lower cholesterol levels. A healthy heart is becoming a huge focus for many of us nowadays. Improving your blood pressure control and thus the health of your heart and circulation system is really important. My most recent online "adventure" is to start a facility for people to ask me my opinion and to provide high quality health information by answering medical questions online.

I also have a special interest in the problem of feeling Tired All the Time and in those who suffer from chronic fatigue or lethargy. This seems to tie in also to skin care issues or skin treatment problems and suggestions. Tiredness and fatigue can lead to major problems for many individuals in modern society and the way that this can affect all areas of general health can be quite invasive in terms of daily life and coping skills.

My work with footballers and athletes leads to a focus on Painful Shoulder conditions and on the problems associated with frozen shoulder or whiplash injuryRotator cuff injury causes problems for many of my patients.

When not working I daydream about my next amazing european vacation trip  My favorite European cities include Paris and Barcelona and my next blog project will be to write about the best way to spend a night in Paris and how to find an apartment in Barcelona. I just love European travel in all its forms.

White Coat High Blood Pressure

White coat high blood pressure

Many people I meet as patients seem to have problems with what is known as white coat high blood pressure or white coat hypertension.

In simple terms their blood pressure goes up simply because its being measured by a doctor or a nurse.

Have you had this happen to you? I'd be interested to hear your experiences if you have.

Actually I'm used to having two checks pretty close to one anther, just to get a more accurate reading. And the first test is always a little higher. I didn't know that it had a name.

Have I ever!  As a child I was bounced from Dr. to Dr. trying to determine what I had; a heart murmur, rheumatic fever . . . “something”, they said, is wrong, but tests never revealed anything conclusively.  Many months of bed rest at several times was prescribed along with numerous injections, tests, etc.  Not until I was in Sr. High School did I put my foot down & refuse further testing of any kind.   I never went to a Dr. again until my late 20’s when my wife coerced me.  He said I had high BP & was about to prescribe meds.  My wife, a nurse, checked it & it was 118/78!  Repeatedly.  Over the years, on the rare occasion I go to a Dr., it always registers high & I walk out exasperated when I’m not listened to.  I’ve just steadfastly refused to accept meds. of any sort.  At 67 still have never taken any prescribed meds., exercise regularly, eat well & do what I want.  Mine is only in a Drs’ office – I regularly give blood & it’s always fine there.  Go figure.

Later – in my mid 40’s I was diagnosed with SVT (probably what I had as a child) & again they wanted me on meds or a catheter ablation.  No way!  I researched the causes & brought my incidents within a very acceptable (to me) range & remain fine.  Doctors & I just don’t get along.

I was diagnosed with white coat syndrome several years ago, so I take my blood pressure at home regularly.  Yesterday I went to a new doctor in the practice and as predicted, my blood pressure shot up to 170/100 or so.  I gave the doctor the blood pressure chart that I keep and he said:  "Why do you take your blood pressure every day--You don't have high blood pressure!"  My pulse was a little fast (102) so he gave me Tenormin  25mg to slow it down a little....All my labwork was totally normal except I had a high blood glucose (plus I did not fast before the test)  Could my high anxiety level cause an increase in blood sugar?  And oh, my cardiogram and respirations well all normal.  My temp was 97.2.  I work out at least 3x/ week and am not overweight.
