Whats in your water? Is it hurting you?
Posted Answers
- There are many types of filtration systems. There are portable filters, faucet filters, and filters for the fridge, shower and the whole house. There are also various methods of filtering: activated charcoal, carbon and reverse osmosis. Keep in mind that, the more complex the system, the more expensive the replacement.
- To determine which system you should use and which will be the cheapest to maintain when replacement time rolls around, you must decide what is important to you. If taste is all you're worried about, a portable filter or a faucet filter will be your best bet, with replacement time ranging from every two to three months, or depending on how often the filter is used. If you are health-conscious, a whole-house system is recommended. Replacement will be more expensive, but is generally only needed every three to six months.
- Carbon filters are considered the best form of filtration. They generally draw out the waste components within the water and leave the rest for drinking. But if they are left unused for long amounts of time, the organic components are capable of molding, and the filter will need to be changed. Likewise, these filters and all others will reduce efficiency the longer and more often they are used. Your taste buds will be the best indicators of the necessity of a filter replacement.
- If you are afraid you will not be able to taste the difference, every filtration system comes with manufacturer's instructions. They will provide you with general guidelines on filter maintenance--but once again, it all depends on how often the product is used.
- Whether or not you are health- or environmentally conscious, filtration systems can be very beneficial to your quality of life and your wallet. They will greatly enhance the flavor of your drinking water and any food you cook with it. By using filtered tap water and avoiding bottled water or those bulky Ozarka jugs delivered monthly, you could save hundreds of dollars a month. There is little reason to go out and buy new water when you can get the same quality right out of your own faucet.
