There are two sides to it because whale hunting is going to point of extinction. Even though it might be their culture but still should Japan be killing innocent animals just because its their culture ?

Whale hunting is a big business.  Whether it is done in the name of science or research doesn't matter.  Even the European countries that hunt whales sell much of what they take to another country.  One whale is worth 1 MILLION dollars.

As far as Japan's annual whale hunt and dolphin slaughter, someone mentioned the blubber being in freezers.  No, they eat all, but there is a dangerously high level of mercury in marine mammal meat, and yes, there is a high rate of cancer in Japan.

Will the whale go extinct from hunting?  Probably.  Unfortunately for most of us adults, we won't be around to see that happen, and the future generations won't be able to see these wonderful animals.

Want to help?  Join organizations that are out there physically fighting for our ocean animals.  Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd, Whales Alive, and many others would love the support.  Sea Shepherd even allows folks to be crew!!

http://whales.greenpeace.org/ Today, only one country in the world continues to conduct whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary: Japan. There was a time in Japan during the food shortage hardships of the postwar period when whale meat was taken as a valuable source of protein. We are alive today thanks in a very real sense to this gift, so should we not reach out in gratitude to whales now and seek a path of peaceful coexistence? This is the message behind a beautiful new animated work by director Yamamura Koji. Please join us in eagerly anticipating its release. Artist: Koji Yamamura

http://weblog.greenpeace.org/whales/2008/01/hydrophone_test.html#more We were offline all day yesterday; otherwise you would have been able to spot some the pretty spectacular icebergs on the webcam! Yesterday we tried out the hydrophone which can record whales under water. Together with Jetske, Gavin and Neil I have worked on finding the ideal way to place and deploy it from the boats. I worked with hydrophones in Brazil previously, but with another and simpler kind. There are few recordings of whales from the Southern Ocean, and I am very keen on recording whales here. This hydrophone can record from longer distances, but we also work under radically different circumstances than in Brazil. We have put heavier weights on the hydrophone, and it would be possible to record even if the boat would travel at a speed of 15 knots. Here is a video that explains how the hydrophone works. As you can see by the t-shirts it was made before we reached these cold waters! More: Maybe you have some whale fluke pictures lying around?
