There's no sense in jumping off of a bridge into the ocean if you can't swim. Start with the kiddie pool. What I mean is that a lot of people think that they need to do everything to lose weight all at once. This is a common misconception. Take baby steps. You don't need to diet and exercise at the same time to start, especially since you're in a wheelchair.
If you have a hard time dieting then slowly start restricting things from your diet. This will keep you from overloading and melting down from taking away all of your vices at once. For example, if you drink sodas, start out by, for one week, simply not drinking any sodas. Then when you're used to the idea, move on to something else, like restricting sweets or greesy and salty foods from your diet. Taking small steps like this on a weekly or bi-monthly basis also helps to keep you from platuing.
If you're 400lbs then there is a lot of weight to be lost without excercise. Eventually, when the weight starts to come off from diet alone, you'll feel better and a lot more energetic. When you have nothing left to restrict from your diet and are on a healthy balanced diet, then you can start exercising to continue seeing results. There are several exercises you can do from a wheel chair, all of which will make you sweat and lose weight. Some are as simple as wheeling yourself around, push your limits and make yourself sweat. Take things slow at first. Rome wasn't built in a day.
Once you are out of the wheelchair, I recommend starting with light cardio, such as going for short walks. Increase the length of your walk every two weeks or once a month. Then later on you could add some resistance training to your routine.
I hope this helps.
