Nothing is wrong with using templates. If you want to do a website, and learn, you must do it yourself. If you learn HTML and CSS you can then tweak the template. If you just use the template the website will look like a template, like all of the average websites out there.

As a web designer I can tell you that templates are great and that there is no real reason not to use them. It is all a matter of your specific needs.

In the beginning of the web originality of the web design was really important to people. as a result we got zillions of different user interfaces and each time you went to a website you had to "learn" how to use it.

Personally, and I can't prove it, I think that blogs did the change. blogs where template oriented and people realized that what people really want is interesting content. the design is secondary. there are example to websites with horrific design that are very successful and vice versa.

As the use of templates evolved so did the quality of the templates. I will not add a link so you will believe my answer is objective, but there are great template websites out there.

If your website is standard don't waist money or time on design just select one of the great thousands of template out there and focus on the content of your website.

Nothing is wrong with using templates as long as there is content. Avoid using to much flash and scripting and your site will do well. Content is king!

One of the biggest disadvantages of using HTML templates is that your website will have an unoriginal design. The website that sold the template to you has likely sold it to hundreds of other people as well. There is no telling how many other sites will look exactly like yours will look.

HTML Knowledge

Most people buy HTML templates because they don't know HTML and don't want to take the time to learn it. There is nothing wrong with that, but what happens when you want to change something about your website? If you play around with the template, you run the risk of messing something up. If you damage the layout, you won't have the knowledge to fix it. Therefore, you are basically stuck with the original template with no way to change it.

Bad Coding

A lot of websites offer free and cheap HTML templates. The problem with these templates is that they are often coded by mediocre web designers. This bad coding can affect your search engine listings and make it very hard for people to find your website. Bad coding can even make your pages slower to load, affecting the visitors you do happen to get.

Links

A lot of people choose to use cheap and free HTML templates to build their websites. The problem with this is that some of those templates require you to leave a link to the original author's website. This link on every page of your site not only looks unprofessional, but it also presents your visitors with the option of leaving your site.
