Is There any way to prevent home heat loss by the dryer vent?
The hood or vent termination outside should have a damper in the end. When the dryer starts it should open the damper to exaust the dryer. If there is not a damper it will let cold air in back through the line and into the room.

standard dryer vents have a damper in them. there is a kit with a bypass damper in it to divert exhaust from the dryer into the house, only use it if you have an electric dryer.
