Stephen Baldwin and Emma, his wife, are named as parents for Charles Baldwin in his Pension Papers from the Civil War. Charles was born 1839 in Smyrna, DE, also found in his Civil War Pension papers. From January 1864, when Charles Baldwin, Coal Heaver, enlisted in the Navy until his death, January 22, 1911 and burial at St. John's Episcopal Church in Accokeek, Prince George's County, Maryland, I can account for his military, marriage, census records for 1870 (VA), 1880 and 1900 (Wash. DC) and 1910 (P.G. County, MD), which shows his residence and two children. They are Randolph Mason Baldwin and Ida E. Baldwin (Raymond) and Crawford. I have not found Charles Baldwin or his parents in the 1850 or 1860 census. You will find Charles Baldwin in many Naval books, as he won the Medal of Honor and also had a destroyer, USS Baldwin named for him in 1942. The Baldwin DNA is listed from a grandson of Charles and relates to the East Coast Baldwins of the USA. Looking for Stephen and Emma Baldwin in 1850 or 1860 Census record with son Charles. Charles could not read or write and that is unusual. My father was an orphan at age 10, but his older brothers remember stories about Charles, their grandfather. Oral history said that Emma was a Cherokee Indian and that Stephen Baldwin worked for the Department of Indian Affairs. I am out of ideas and have often wondered if Charles had siblings. Also wondering if the term, Emma, his wife had any significance?
