Want to remarry, husband died & need to collect his Social Security Benefits

My husband passed away at the age of 48 years. I have been told by Social Security I have to wait until I am 60 years old to remarry in order to collect my husbands Social Security benefits, I need to collect his benefits because his benefits will be much higher than mine, I didn't work for 28 years, I only started working after he died. Is this true that I will have to wait? If so, it is not fair, I have a man I want to marry now and I will have to wait 5 years to marry him??

Patty - I don't think there is a yes or no answer to your question. The Social Security Handbook which is the Bible for SS kinda talks out of both sides of their face on this. i.e. http://www.socialsecuritybenefitshandbook.com/page6.html#204_Spouse. Being married is not the golden goose some folks thinks. Unless you just like to know another body is in the house I would continue working and stay single as long as possible. Ask yourself this question; Is a few (probable less then $300) dollars worth the aggravation of a husband? Hess
