Waking up during the night

If a person wakes up once or twice during the night, and stays up for about 45 minutes before falling back asleep, is he or she suffering from a form of insomnia?

Wikipedia

suggests a distinction between REAL Insomnia and the phenomenon you describe, which is labeled as merely "poor sleep quality".

Some people claim that since the first 40 minutes of sleep are the most important phases in terms of refreshing yourself, it may actually be beneficial to sleep twice during the night instead of one long sleep. I had a teacher in high school who was insanely efficient about his sleep, and he swore that sleeping twice for three hours with an hour of doing useful things in the middle left him better equipped to handle the day than sleeping for seven straight hours.

That said, the main rules for sleep issues remain the same - don't stay in bed. Get up and read, get a cup of herbal tea, water, or something without caffeine. Be sure to use the restroom. Some people get good results from deep breathing exercises and/or yoga.

Good luck, and sleep tight,

t.c.
