W as a sometimes vowel!

When I mentioned the vowels were "a,e,i,o,u and sometimes y and w " in a aerobics class I was attending everyone laughed. I was taught that in grade school but no one seems to have ever heard of w as a vowel. I am sure I am correct but I would like written proof! Please help. I just gave away my English textbooks so I can't just look it up.
