I am planning on taking a 'volunteer' vacation during the week of Christmas 2009. In addition to paying my own transportation costs, I don't mind paying a low fee, less than $500.00, for my room and board. Can anyone suggests such a place or a website where I can find the info. I have checked with idealists.org, but mosts of those organizations charge a lot more than what I am able to pay. I would like to volunteer in a wildlife/animal/eco-sustainabilty project, but I am open to other ideas.
Folks in the Gulf Coast are still recovering from Katrina. I stayed at Camp Biloxi in Biloxi MS. I believe it's still less than $200 for a week room and board. They had an outreach program there with dogs to help people who are still emotionally recovering from their losses. You would have to pay your travel and perhaps a car to get around down there. There are also camps in Lousiana.
