Visual weight is how an object looks to the eye. You can have one object that weighs 100lbs and another that weighs 5lbs. The 5lbs object could visually weigh more than the 100lbs object. Example: a Lucite table 4x4 has a larger visual weight then a solid marble table that is only 2x3.Visual weight is very important when balancing out a room.

Note: Visual weight not only refers to shape; it also includes its color intensity and pattern.
