Was Vietnam fought over oil?

Someone mentioned the U.S. was in Vietnam because of oil.  I am curious if anyone has heard a similar story.  I find it unlikely since the major finds in Vietnam are offshore between Vietnam and China and these were not found till the last decade.  Even in South East Asia, Vietnam is number three in oil production.  That wouldn't make it a major provider. I would like to make my own personal opinion transparent while I ask this question, because I think these kinds of questions often carry a lot of political baggage.  I hope I can get some objective answers on how much knowledge our government has of Vietnam's oil potential.

Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

Vietnam was all about stopping the spread of communism. I'm old enough to remember the cold war. As a child, I listened to my grandparents talk about it. My grandpap escaped from Croatia after it had been swallowed up into Communist Yugoslavia. Communism was feared and hated.

Also, I'm not sure there was a problem with oil supplies at the time of our involvement in Vietnam, at least not a problem that the average person pondered. I can remember the late 60s when gas prices were extremely low, like $.28/gal. And there were 'gas wars' where two stations next to each other would lower prices a penny at a time, trying to outdo each other. My mom always bought from the small, independent station no matter the price, though.

Anyway, no. Vietnam was about stopping communism. Period. But creating other reasons and brand new history now sure makes for interesting discussion, huh?

I'm sorry i don't know how much potential vietnam has for oil, but you are right about it not being likely. If we were there for any finacial gain the money would be in rubber trees, drugs, and ofcourse lyndon b. Johnson had major investments in a company that made hilicopters for the millitary. The official reason we were there was because france asked us to go and we want to maintain our relationships with our allies and make them happy. Ofcourse where is france now?
