For a laptop you can buy a simple external usb device for connecting your vcr and capturing your old videos. Here's a nice simple one: http://www.avermedia-usa.com/2005home/product/videocapture/ezmakerusbplus/ezmakerusbplus.shtml.

You can purchase an external one if you have a desktop:

There are also Plextor models that do the most of the work on the device itself: http://www.plextor.com/english/products/product_dvc.html.

There are more companies and models like: http://www.hauppauge.com/ and http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Home/.

You should check your needs and decide.

All of the devices work the same:

You connect your vcr and you press play, on the computer you use the device software and capture your video.
