Vampire bats?

Recently read this article on vampire bats killing people. Is this for real? I thought they existed only in horror movies

Any excuse not to study!

I think this is very rare, vampire bats normally feed on mammals, but I guess if there are not many animals around and there are people sleeping outdoors, then they would smell the blood and attack - I do not think CNN would publish it if it was not at least a very likely option!
