I would get him tickets to something that you could do together, like a festival, play or concert. These have always been the best presents, in my experience. Being able to spend time and have a special occasion with the person you love is the best. Guys and girls love gifts like this.
My trick with gifts is to get something small but really significant, the trick of this is thinking back a couple of months and try to remember if he mention anything that he really love or wanted for a long time, it can be a book he love or tickets to see a band he adores, or even his favorite candy since he was a kid. The point isn't the item itself, but the fact you remember and that you paid attention.

What does he like to do? If he likes music, I'd suggest making a remix for him with all his favorite tracks. If he likes going out, get him a gift card to his favorite place. If he likes to stay in and watch movies, get him a gift card to blockbuster. Just be creative!
