The history of that day is very interesting, read here.  The Catholic church formally accepted 11 different Valentine days..... It's basically a christian holliday (so the christian world celebrates it) but many other religions "adopted" it..... Not all celebrate it in the same way.  Many people know how to give love few know to both give and accept love....

I don't know to much about the origins although I thought it had something to do with St Valentine. But its not only people in America who celebrate it, I live in Australia and its quite a big thing over here too.
