VA affairs not doing enough to prevent suicide?

According to a class action suit filed this past week, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs isn't doing enough to prevent suicide and provide adequate medical care for Americans who have served in the armed forces.

Do you know a veteran? Are government bodies inadequately addressing a "rising tide" of mental health problems, especially post-traumatic stress disorder?

RE: VA affairs not doing enough to prevent suicide?

Most definitely!!! Veterans who suffer from PTSD are treated horribly by the VA. There are more of us than the public has any idea of by a long shot. Most don't even go for treatment through the VA because of the level of care provided (or lack thereof.)

The article addresses the problem relating to the low number of psychiatrists available yet this is only a very small portion of problem.

Does the article discuss how the VA tries to deliberatly disqualify veterans for VA benefits to save money?

No.

Do they mention the fact that most claims are kicked back time and time again for miniscule paperwork errors just to avoid making payments to qualified veterans?

No.

What about how the VA treats the vets?

Like we are a bunch of freeloading losers there for for a damn handout!

Medical care / psychiatric care is supposed to be something we EARNED... not something we should have to beg for. It sickens my stomach and pisses me the F*#* off...Yell

The VA has many problems. Veterans can have their prescriptions filled for $8.00 from the VA. Sounds good? You can get most of the same prescriptions filled at WalMart for $4.00. If the VA payed the same prices for drugs as WalMart they could save 100's of millions to help those who need mental health problems.

Being a combat veteran from the Vietnam era, I can assure you that veterans are better cared for now then they ever were.  That said, they are still treated horridly, most getting worse medical treatment than an ax murderer in prison.  It is a national shame, and I don't believe it will get better until we get a president that was not a draft dodger, someone who served in the military and respects the troops and knows their sacrifices.

In the mid 70s,  statistics showed that 1/3 of veterans were either in prison, committed suicide, or had bad military discharges (caused by PTSD), or a combination of the three.  We are now witnessing history repeat itself.
