Universal health care

who are the 47 million or so (health care)uninsured in this country? What is their income? Do they work? If so, what kinds of jobs do they have?

What is the #1 reason this group does not have heath insurance or adequate health insurance. Affordability? If so, what percentage of income should be allotted to health insurance premiums, co-pays, deductibles etc.?

pre-existing conditions exclusion applies only to individual policies not groups. It will cost money to cover these people. Does anyone know how much?

medicaid and medicare are government run health insurance programs. Is Obama's government option plan another government health insurance program? if so, why not just extend medicaid to cover these people?

Obama must be absolutely crystal clear about his program so the average person can understand it. Too much complexity will doom this program as it did in 1992 with the Clinton's program.

They are the small business owners, the people who make minimum wage and those who are hired as part-time so the companies won't have to pay insurance and benefits: those who, through no fault of their own, are unemployed and students.  Also, those with pre-existing conditions where no insurance companies will insure them. Companies, like auto repair shops,  get around providing insurance, by hiring "contractors" who must provide their own insurance.  People who have spouses that carried insurance and either die or divorce them often can not keep the insurance. The listing goes on and on.  There are many people who just barely make it through each day and cannot afford health insurance.  As the bigger companies are closing down, many group plans are no longer there.  People who need to stop work to care for an ill loved one cannot  alwaysafford to do it because of losing insurance and not being eligible for Medicare.  I came up with this listing based on close friends and relatives who fall into the above categories.  There are, I'm sure, many, many more.  My 47 year old son (a body man) has major heart problems. His insurance costs over $500 a month (BC/BS), he must pay the first $1,000 of prescriptions each year (probably by March), must pay 80% after that. His hospital coverage is only 80%.  This runs into thousands of dollars a year, and after paying insurance for car, life, etc. is very costly. I think that the for the majority of people, they simply cannot afford it. Do I like the government's taking over?  Absolutely not ! I will be interested in watching  what answers you receive regarding costs.  Thank you for posting, it's one of the better ones on Yedda regarding this subject.

Thanks for your post. That was helpful. I'm still not clear what Obama's plan is all about.

Take my situation as an example. I'm a (retired) federal employee. I'm very satisfied with my health insurance coverage. What happens is the government negotiates with various private health insurance companies on behalf of the federal government employees(millions). The federal government employees have about a dozen or so different private health insurance companies to choose from, each company offering various options. The federal employee pays about 1/3 of the premium and the government chips in the remaining 2/3. I think the reason we get such a good deal is the size of the potential pool of insured. The more the merrier for the insurance companies.

Now for the 47 million currently uninsured. That's a huge pool of potential insured. With the government negotiating on their behalf, I'm sure the government can and will come up with a dozen or more companies offering good coverage. The people that are working now and uninsured will be able to pay a portion of the premiums. If they are not working they will probably have to contribute out of savings or real property(home) up to a point. This is like medicaid.

Here comes the problem. This insurance, like federal employees, will be excellent probably because 47 million is the largest pool of insured ever. Once people see how good the coverage is based on the premiums, private companies will say why don't we drop our coverage and let our employees sign up for the federal plan? This could snowball until everyone is eventually covered by the government plan. This is not necessarily a bad thing. This could be good for all concerned. One huge group plan negotiated with all existing private insurance companies. How much it will cost is the only thing that will be difficult to foresee. It may end up saving us some money in the long run. who knows. But I don't see how the above process can be forestalled.  just trying to be realistic. The only way Obama is going to sell this idea is by convincing people that this is going to be better for all concerned. That will be a very tough sell.

I can see your point.  I, too, am a retired federal worker (DOE), but I am also on medicare.  I can carry the cheapest insurance offered to me (GEHA at under $75/month) since, for medicare recipients, they all pay what Medicare does not cover. I pay half for brand name prescriptions or $5/mo for generic, and know that  as federal retirees, we have a choice of the best programs out there.. I just  hate to lose it for a program that could be better, but that may not, or one that might have higher costs; I agree with you that it will happen and we will be under the new plan.  I can't see Congress giving up their health care benefits for this, but then, I MIGHT be wrong.  I want to retain my choice of doctors and hospitals, and I keep thinking about how the Canadian system works--and I would not want that happening.  Like all new things, it's a little scary even though it sounds like this new plan will benefit many Americans. I just don't yet know if it will benefit us of all. Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. Have a great weekend.
