Hi,
The present exchange rate is 197.42 US$ = 100.00 British pounds.  So all you should do is devide the sum in US$ by 197.42 and get the exact figure you look for.  If you are lazy to do it here is a site that will do it for you and give you the excahnge rate at the moment you type it.

If you are talking about physically holding dollars, take them to a bank that does conversions, or to an international port of some kind where they will have money changers.
