Unable to open Nikon camera movie files on Vista

I had XP but now have Vista on a new computer. I am unable to open movies made on my Nikon 5600 digital camera. It asks for a program to open it and Windows Media cannot...Help please?

You need QuickTime to view MOV files, download and install QuickTime from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/.

Nikon uses Apple .mov format so of course Microsoft applications don't support it, but why? MS keeps saying how universal its new platforms are but probably have to convert (and therefore loose quality) to .mpeg etc.

I have a Nikon camera too and if I had known about the way Nikon had gone with its great quicktime movie standard I might have thought twice. Had to purchase converting software and filters, which I will probably have to renew for Vista
