Ubuntu - Linux

Has anyone tried the Linux based, operating system called Ubuntu? I'm thinking to give it a try, but deterred from incompatibility issues. What major benefits will I draw from it?

I can add, regarding compatibility issues that you can always download Ubuntu, burn the image and boot your machine with it (this is what is called LiveCD). This will allow you to dry run Ubuntu from the CDROM/DVD without even installing it or formating your machine.

It's a great way to see if everything is compatible out of the box like video cards, sound card and network adapters.

If its not working straight out of the box, I'll start searching in Google and the Ubuntu Forums if there is a quick fix for it.

The major advantage of Ubuntu is it being open-source operating system, therefore you can rest assured that no other interest but your own is leading the developers of this system (ie. DRM of Vista will force you to use certain files you bought in certain environments that will do good only to the interest of Microsoft). Some more advatages: 1. much more stable and secure comparing to Vista. 2. It's a bit funny, but considering the current status of Vista in the market, it seems like the compatibility issue is doing only good to Linux systems, since most companies still haven't made their products compatible to Vista. 3. Hardware requirements: Ubuntu is running on computers that barely run XP. this is verified. It’s easy to use, and being a Debian derivitive it provides its user with a huge array of ready to go packages. Using XDMCP it enables any computer on the network to share the power of the main desktop. And it’s very easy to configure. The only disadvantage of Obuntu I can have in mind is its limited support of KDE.

Thanks guys, but I just got a live demo of Ubuntu on an acquaintance's computer, and the system crashed 3 times. The thing looks very nice, but demands much more attention to computer means than computer's production. The transition does seem inevitable, just not yet. For me, at least.
