Two Rowentas and neither on is working properly!

I have a Rowenta "Focus" # DZ5080.  It is relatively new and is now spurting yellow/brownish streaks ; and , it has ruined three items of mine.  I am feeling that it needs to be cleaned internally.  If so, how might I do that?  I still have the Rowenta that I had before that one.  All of a sudden , it started cutting off while I was using it.  It appears to have a short wire in it.  Can you help me?

In regards to your 'Focus' model, it sounds as though you are either:

  1. using plain tap water that may contain high levels of iron or other organic matter that has collected inside the water, causing the brown streaks, OR
  2. using pure distilled water which would cause the 'spurting'.

According to the Owner's Manual you should use bottled spring water. In addition, try the 'Self Clean' cycle at least once a month.  This allows loose mineral deposits and other impurities to be flushed out the sole plate:

  1. Fill the iron with water to the MAX mark on the water tank.
  2. Set the variable steam lever to MINIMUM.
  3. Stand the iron on heel and plug in.
  4. Set the thermostat to ( . . . ) setting.
  5. Once heated, unplug iron.
  6. Hold iron horizontally over the sink with the sole plate pointing away from you.
  7. Move the variable steam lever completely to the right and hold in the self-clean position for one full minute.  This will cause steam and hot water to be ejected from the sole plate. Take precautions.
  8. Move the iron gently, back and forth, and side-to-side, until all the water has run through the plate.
  9. Carefully wipe all water and material from the sole plate with an old towel.
  10. Place iron on heel and leave to cool.
  11. Before using iron again (for clothing), test steam and burst of steam on an old towel or cloth you can throw away.

If the problem persists, call Rowenta Customer Service at: 781-396-0600.

Hope this helps!
