Would You Turn Down a Job Promotion?

Would you turn down a job promotion if it were offered? What would cause you to turn it down, if the offer included a vast improvement in pay for instance?

I would first determine my priorities vis-a vis family time vs time required for the job. It might mean more travel and time away from the family; it might mean more hours; it might mean greater stress that could be detrimental to health.

I would turn it down if it cut into my personal time and enjoyment of life.

I would turn it down if it required me to live somewhere I did not want to.  For example, no amount of money will persuade me to live in India or Korea.  Nothing against those countries, I've been to both and just don't see myself fitting in there.

Another thing I would turn down a massive promotion/raise for would be if it required me to do things I don't want to do.  I will not become a skydiving instructor (no reason on earth for me to jump out of a perfectly functional plane), or a nurse (too queasy), or a cigarette advertiser (don't like smoking or wish to promote it).

Everyone has his or her reasons to do or not to do something.  Money and title are only two factors of life, not the end all be all.  :o)

What you think about you bring about!!!

This happened to me...back in the 1970's, I was a makeup artist and became a field rep for Redken Labs....I loved the job!! the travel, etc...after 3 years, they offered me the position of supervisor...I did not want the job as I saw what my supervisors went thru!! all the paperwork, etc..and I am not a 'mangerial' type of guy!! So I asked them if I could try it for 6 months or even one year, and then if I found it not satisfactory, go back to being a field rep?? they said, "No; if you get a promotion, you continue going 'upward and onward' with the company"......so, with a very heavy heart, I quit.......I do not regret my decision, but just wish the company would have let me try it...oh well!!!

I actually turned down a promotion at this search engine optimization company where I used to work as it would mean no more overtime pay for a supervisory level and that will greatly affect my salary.  I think people turn down job promotion offers for different reasons - mine has something to do with the financial aspect.
