A:

You are ill or injured.  You see a physician for this illness or injury and they 'treat' you for this.  That would be your treating physician.  I'm guessing you're wondering about the 'legal' terminology b/c of work comp or disability or some hearing?  Or you need to list your TP for your job?  I am not ill at the moment, but I have a physician.  He will treat me for whatever comes up.  If he cannot do it, he may refer me to a specialist.  In such a case, for only that reason I was referred that (the specialist) would be my 'treating physician.'  Again, only for that one thing.  Does that help?

More specifically, when there is a surgeon and a specialist, who has the legal authority to release you to work. What if one releases you and the other does not? I got fired off my job of 27 years because of this.

I'm sorry to hear that, Rick.  How unfair.  When I had an emergency and was hospitalized, the surgeon was the only one who could release me to work, not my personal physician.  Because my physician was not treating me.  Once the surgeon released me, all contact with him was finished, and any more medical contact would be with my regular doctor.  I did not have a specialist.  But I would think they would be talking together.  Honestly?  I would talk to a lawyer (most first consultation visits are free) and find out what your rights are and who did you wrong.  The medical professionals or your job.

Obviously your job did you wrong, but on what grounds and how come they made that determination?  You cannot be fired for a medical condition.  The only thing I could think of is you have just one name listed as "TP" and that's the one they listened to.

So your job was wrong, but using information from whom and why?

What a mess.  Are you okay?
