I always get travel insurance on the off chance that someone gets sick prior to the trip and we need to cancel short term. Several years ago I took my daughters to Mexico on vacation and they both got sick. I booked the trip through AAA with the insurance. We ended up leaving 3 days early. AAA sent me papers to fill out to get reimburst for the days I had paid for (it was an all-inclusive resort). The problem...I did not take my daughters to a dr. in Mexico, who had to fill out the forms for proof that they were indeed ill. Not only did I not get reimburst for that, the flights I booked to return home early cost more than the entire vacation package. So the "great" deal I got, was not a great deal in the end!! To the best of my knowledge, travel insurance had nothing to do with helping with emergency flights home. However, I still get the insurance. Perhaps if I had been in the U.S., I could have taken them to a dr. and faxed the paperwork for reimbursment.
