Because I am not sure as to how you want to transport your wine, I have several suggestions that you should and shouldn't do when traveling by car. If you are interested in air travel, I suggest you check with your travel agent because of all of the new security regulations. Make sure you don't put the wine in your trunk. Ideally, bring a large cooler, and keep the wine in the cardboard or wooden carrier you get from the winery. Besides protecting the bottle, it also provides some insulation. Two other possibilities are the use of bubble wrap and/or flotation devices the kids wear while swimming. Don't place the bottles on their sides because if the temperature soars, the wine can actually start to push its way out past the cork. Storing the wine upright position, allows it to expand a little more, yet not enough to cause any problems. Finally, crack the windows for some airflow in the car and if possible, park in a shady spot.
