Tips on growing tomatoes on balcony

does a balcony grown tomato plant need all day sun, or will half day be adequate? I planted one plant about 6 weeks ago. It has grown several inches but foliage seems less than it should, and have seen no signs of maturation. I live near Austin, Tx and my balcony gets afternoon sun. Neva Grieves

Tomato is a sun loving plant, it needs at least 6-8 sunlight a day. If your balcony can provide this sunlight requirement then it's okay to have your tomato on balcony.

If less sunlight is received by your tomato, you can supplement it with an artificial light like flourescent bulb.

hi,

tomatoes really love sun and heat to thrive. if it's getting afternoon sun that should work. they also need fertilizer and an adequate sized pot. unless it's a patio type tomato, they will grow and fill a pot pretty quickly. i think if you give it some plant food- maybe one formulated for tomatoes, and make sure it's not pot bound, you'll tomatoes in no time.
