Whenever I'm staying at a hotel I find myself in awkward situations with tipping. I never know exactly when I'm supposed to tip someone and when I'm not. I'm talking about the porter, the valet, the bellman and so on. Are there any rules about this?
What I do is quite simple: I tip when I recieve a service that I could have done myself (e.g. carry my bags). When I'm given a service that I can't do myself, I see it as part of the service in the hotel and I don't tip.
