I recently bought a 1998 BMW 528i and I LOVE it, but I have one concern: every time I turn off the engine, there is a "ticking" sound, similar sound heard from a brand new car - i think it's the sound of metal that has gotten hot & is either expanding or contracting. It is noticeable enought that a couple of friends have commented on it. I don't think it's normal. Anyone know anything on this? It has low miles for a 10 year old car: under 60K, and is otherwise (as far as I know) in fantastic shape.

I think you're right that it is metal contracting. It's possible that it is running a little hotter than it is designed to. Have you checked the coolant level?
I have been keeping an eye on the temp guage and it stays steady in the middle. I checked the coolant not long ago when I got the oil changed, but level was fine. There is a little rattle in the muffler area at an idle - especially when I first start it, but I don't know if that's related. (Ok- as is probably obvious, I'm not much of a mechanic! lol I'd just hate to take it in and pay them a couple hundred dollars to tell me there's nothing wrong. Or worse yet- try to tell me there is something wrong when there isn't.) Thanks for your reply! Keep 'em coming if you think of more.
