COMMENT : If life is a banquet, there are many bitter dishes among the sweet. And to the starving who do not know the difference or cannot get to the sweet dishes, the bitter ones may be all they taste. And, too, there are those dishes that do not nourish at all -- those are at this banquet, too, I think. If one is starving and only finds those dishes that do not nourish, then one's death is only hastened, I think.

Great George ! Now I want to hear about how you'd conduct yourself day in and day out as President. What do you stand for? How are you the best person to solve all the problems that confront a man like Barack Obama - brave soul that he is, of mixed race that he is, with a wife and two girls that he is? How are your answers to the problems that confont Barack Obama better than his? I want to know. If you have that much audicity to think you could be in his shoes and do better than he, I want to know : How are you going to do that?

BUT : Just so you know, that's not MY answer to this question. Far from it. Far far far less grandiose.

Well Mr. Hood, let me tell you how much audacity I have. The first thing I am going to do is ask for Joe Biden to resign and appoint Newt Gingrich as my VP.  Dick Cheney as my Sec. of State and Mitt Romney as Sec. of the Treasury. Bill Oreilly as my Chief of Staff and Rush Limbaugh as Spokesman.. I am not going to openly admit that I am no more that a community organizer, so I will just let Newt run the country and sign my name to it. In other words, I am going to delegate to the best of the best. I will also not be seeking a second term so I will get the hard issues done and done right. I won't be worried about getting people angry, just about getting this country back on track. I will let AIG, GM, Chrysler and all the others fall and let new, fresh companies take their place. I will see that the S.E.C is revamped and the criminals go to jail. I will use all the power I can muster to see that China enforces tough embargos on Korea. I will back Israel in all there efforts against Iran and use whatever means necessary to wipe out the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden. I will not make excuses for America in leading the world to peace by using force, if I have to.

On the second day in office, I will..............

George~

That statement about life being a banquet is a favorite line from Auntie Mame, meaning that most poor (she said sonsabitches) souls are starving to death.  What it says to me is:  There is a joyous and beautiful life to be lived and most of us fail to see/live it.

OK, George. You've obviously given this some thought. Delegation is great. Got to be absolutely confident in your people, though, as president : Will they do as you want them to? Got to herd these cats in the direction you're envisioning.

"leading the world to peace by using force" hmmmm Haven't others attempted this in the past -- and failed? I DO think the US COULD lead the world into peace, and is in fact in many ways already doing it -- but without a kind of awareness that that's what they're doing.

Might you want to take a more considered approach to this issue as president -- and lead us into a peace using peaceful means : perhaps recognizing the ways in which we already live in peace and build upon that, rather than go at something as delicate as world peace with rough hands. Maybe more than a day might be necessary to investigate a means of doing this, perhaps?

I'm confident here that it can be done, too. I admire your chutzpa in thinking you could take on a task like this. I think there are millions of others just ready to support someone taking on this task.

I think Barack Obama is one of them. Maybe you should send him a letter outlining your plan -- that it, YOUR plan, should supplant Mr. Obama's plan and course of action, since you're the one who believes he can do a better job than Mr. Obama. Mr. Obama could use your help, don't you think?

I think at heart he is a man of the people, looking to lead by example as much as by legislation. Or perhaps not. But really, should that not be that you are man of the people, with the common touch, the understanding of humanity -- of Americans' hopes and dreams, and of how these have suffered through cynicism and greed and confusion?

And should you not come to understand that upon taking the mantle of leading this country, you are in fact its most obvious servant : answerable to each and every soul within this nation? You serve massa, George, you serve all us massas : you serve us masses, the masses, the peoples, each and every person unique and a universe unto himself or herself and precious and full of hope that maybe, maybe, yes maybe you can indeed understand their confusion and lack of perspective and use your power wisely as a wise and humble leader answerable to each soul within this nation.

Ah : A great man you must be, sir, great and humble and with great understanding to believe you could do this! Surely you could inspire others with such a depth of understanding and a keen sense of purpose and of just exactly what needs to be done and who best it would be to enlist their help to accomplish your vision.

Go for it, man! If you are such a man of such vision and understanding, I can understand your frustration with others who think they can lead this country as wisely as you and who fail to for lack of the understanding and vision you have. You must indeed be heartsick at all you see, of the vainglorious attempts of others who do not see as you do. You must suffer at seeing the mistakes of others : for power, for gain, for greed, for satisfaction of ego rather than submission to the good of all... I can understand how frustrating this must be for you.

So, get going on your plan. The details must be wonderful!

And if you develop a detailed, thoughtful, well-thought-through plan, submit it in good faith to Mr. Obama through the means available to U.S. citizens through email, fax, phone, blogs, forums like this, universities, letters to the editor in major newspapers, articles in journals, sending your plan to thought leaders and think tank members, sharing your plan with those whom you would like to carry out your ideas.

And if you find after making a concerted effort, in good faith, at this level of depth and with such heartfelt, thoughtful, passionate purpose, that again and again your good plan is being thwarted by those who cannot see its common sense, then you have a couple of options:

One : actually run for president yourself (I know that's a bit silly, given that you're supposed to already actually BE president, according to the question). Of course, to do this according to the parameters of the original question, you must not reveal who you are, you must forego any recognition for your achievements, no one must know your name, so actually running for president might be problematic.

Two : According to our constitution, you have every right to organize to overthrow tyranny if that is how you perceive Mr. Obama's political stance : as a man of tyranny, a tyrannical leader, an oppressive leader.

How far do you want to take your wish ? How compassionate and dispassionate and kind and understanding of far-reaching consequences do you think you can actually be as president? How understanding could you be that your life would no longer be your own? Nor the lives of those close to you. You would be answerable to each person in this entire nation regarding the fate of this country. You, I gather unlike Mr. Obama who is of mixed race, would bypass the uncomfortable feelings that gives rise to in some Americans.

Yet you must still be keenly aware that at any given moment moving among the American public, your safety would be the matter of an entire staff - and of your family. You would be keenly aware that you are answerable to not only your own conscience, but to the national conscience -- which takes into account the moral fibre of each and every person living in this country and attempts at its best to strengthen that delicate fabric.

Our constitution gives you the right to overthrow a tyranical leader : Is that not how this nation came to be? You must be wise, George : As wise as those who founded this nation. You have, of course, studied "The Federalist Papers," I'm sure. You comprehend constitutional law to its very depths, you know the constitution backwards and forwards, and have studied each opinion rendered over the past two hundred some years to understand how others have wrestled with constitutional ideals and actualities and what is justice and how can one uphold the right to freedom -- so courageously wrested from the jaws of tyranny before, so intelligently, so compassionately, and yet with mistakes too that generations of Americans have wrestled with, the inconsistencies of our founders.

AND, you are willing to do all this incognito, as it were, without anyone knowing it is you who are doing all this. Without ego, without recognition.

Well, you are the ultimate hero, I guess.

Yes, indeed, my hat's off to you.

Yes, I believe to the marrow of my bones and to the depths of my DNA that "There is a joyous and beautiful life to be lived and most of us fail to see/live it." I believe this to such an extent that I have attempted all my born days to learn how I can do this - to live life finely and as others before us have tried and tried - as those around me try and have tried.

This quest is one that I have sought to understand how to live, while at the same time actually living, as we all do. Wrestling with understanding how I do not live up to the mark, day in and day out, in each of my thoughts, actions, words, even intentions. How can I do better? Always : How can I do better? Risking all for How can I do better?

It is one thing to use a metaphor like "banquet" to describe what the fine ways of living are in a musical like Mame. But how do I translate that into my everyday choices in my life so I live my enjoyment of that banquet - in a way that gives that metaphor the rich meaning it is intended to convey? And not as a metaphor any more : but as my reality that I live and base my choices upon and show through my actions and choices to others what I mean by enjoying this banquet.

Upon reflection, this becomes the quest of a lifetime : not easy to define, not easy to live, not easy to show to others so they might understand, as it's not an easy thing to eat well at that banquet when there are not others to eat well as you do. Part of enjoying that banquet is seeing delight in others' eyes : enjoying it alone is lonely and subject to others' incredulity at best and jealousy at worst.

So : what I wrote before about this banquet : Maybe this is truly what people wrestle with as they get a glimpse of the richness of life that human beings might live. Maybe understanding that might help in being patient with people who don't see as clearly as you do how to enjoy the fine dishes, the nurturing dishes, the wise dishes, the luscious and subtle dishes, the sweet dishes, the healthy dishes, the kind and loving dishes - or even how to develop a discerning palate educated to recognize the wonderful nuance of the very best dishes.

Starving souls are in pain, are undernourished. Starving souls will eat just about anything, do you not think? They'll eat rotten dishes and the finest dishes without knowing which is which, just to sate their hunger. Do you not think people who are starving need patience and understanding from one like you who has developed this exquisite palate?

Mr Hood,

I believe that the question you asked was a hypothetical, so I answered hypothetically. In reality, I would never claim or state any of the things you have so articulately stated for me. The error in your reply to me is that you drift in and out of the hypothetical. The reality is, I am only one person, with one vote, I am "Joe Average". I make no claims that I could, or would be a better president. What I will claim and state is, I can and will make a difference. I am so average that when I speak, I speak for many. The opinions that I have are the opinions of many, so that makes me powerful. Myself, and the many I speak for, will go to the polls in 2010 and 2012 and cast our votes. There is no doubt in my mind that we will oust Obama, and the far left liberals from office. We may live in more idealistic and progressive times, but I don't think Americans are ready for such radical change or socialism.

When the Framers drew the Constitution and the Bill of Rights it was indeed progressive and idealistic, but in a way that moved us from the tyrany of government that Mr. Obama is trying to lead us back into.

Americans want jobs, they want government to help, but they do not want there every move to be dictated to, no womb to tomb. When starving people are offered a slice of bread they will take it with conditions, once their belly is full, they will bite the hand that fed them for freedom. The very basis of the constitution, freedom.

Obama has his followers fooled, he could care less about any of them. It is all about him and nothing more. When the liberals wake up from their nap, they will vote him out too. Even the most progressive leftist liberals won't stand being dictated to.

So Mr Hood, if you think that you know me, and what I stand for, then you must also know the millions of others behind me, beside me, and in front of me. You have a good day sir.

George~

Yes of course, Robinhood, I do indeed believe those less fortunate than the rest of us deserve our patience and understanding.  And, with the type of feelings you have on this subject I would bet that you do indeed freely demonstrate those traits.  I know I do.

I have no problem in that area, sharing, understanding, patience.

But before I was able to forgive myself for NOT showing such compassion in years past, I felt pretty much as you describe yourself by wondering how I could answer my own question.

I found MY answer by forgiving myself for the deeds I had neglected to do when I was a "spiritual child" and seeing thru a glass darkly and slowly beginning to grow up into a spiritual adult.

Realizing that 24 hours a day is all any of us are granted each and every day and spending most of those 24 hours in THANKSGIVING.  That is how I find my peace.  That is how I enjoy this BEAUTIFUL BANQUET WE CALL LIFE. NJoy
