Termination of custody and adoption

what would adoptive parents need to do if custody is given up voluntarily by the birth parents in IL.

The situation is a woman wants my husband and I to adopt her two young girls.  ages 2 and 9 weeks.  Both she and the father are in agreement on this and willing to sign papers giving up custody.  Their reasons for this are that they are young and still party alot, subjecting the girls to drugs and drinking and sex, also they are not financially stable enough to properly care for the girls.  I'm not sure what my husband and I have to do besides hire a lawyer and pay court costs.  I'm wondering about homestudy and anything else there may be.........

Im pretty sure it can be done privately with a lawyer who specializes in adoption.  There are 2 things you should consider.  First, if the parents were partiers and still are there could be a chance the mother did drugs during her pregnancy, which could mean developmental problems later.  The other thing to consider is, depending which state you live in the mother usually has a period of time to change her mind.  These children need real parents like you - go for it - but do it through a reputable lawyer - good luck

Thank you so much!  I have looked online for information and  everything is about the state terminating custody, the father giving up custody, and safe houses where mothers can leave their babies.  The parents are people that we know. We know for a fact that the mother smoked pot while pregnant with both girls.  My husband and I are prepared to deal with any problems that may cause later in life. I don't think the mother will change her mind.  She will likely be going to prison if she gets caught with drugs.  She is already on probation because of drugs. The older girl is very much withdrawn and keeps to herself.  She does not interact with other children her age.  We think that once we get them, maybe she will open up because she will have a place where she can feel safe and all the love she can handle. I'm sure it will take time, but we are patient.   My home is clean, drug free, neither of us drink, we attend church and help out with all of the youth activities at church, and we have a schedule.  Its going to be a complete 180 for these girls and I hope that they adjust well.
