Tenant/landlord

If a lease was broken in upstate NY, but the landlord rented the apartment within 30 days, can the previous tenant be held responsible for the remainder of the previous lease?

I don't think the tenant should be responsible for the lease unless the landlord had failed to re-lease the apartment within the 30 days.
