From everything I could find about this song, the writers are listed as Mevern "Rivers" Rutherford and George Teren.  If there was a ghost writer that actually wrote the original lyrics, I couldn't find it.  Perhaps asking the record company if a ghost writer was used and the name of that person may shed some light on whether these were the actual artists or just the ones that got the final and popular version  written which is in the top 10 on the Country charts with Brad Paisley and also another version which is such on the Christian charts which is also on the top of that list.  However, the fact that your relative who may have penned the rough version sold the rights to it for whatever was agreed upon, there may be no recourse for anybody else to capitalize on it.  Hope this helps.
