Teens at Unsupervised Parties

What do you do if your teen (age 17 years old) tells you where they're going.  You know there's going to be drinking going on but your child assures you they won't participate.  Do you let them go.  If not, how do you stop them from going?

Until the age of 18 I would exercise my powers as a parent. I would assume that my 17 year old would already know by now my stand and would absolutely refuse to let him go. This is easier to say than do because most parents look for an easy way out and avoid any confrontation. Not me.

I think trying to prevent teenagers from drinking and having sex is like trying to stop the wind from blowing. The best you can do is raise them right and hope they make the best choices they can. And that has to start way before the teenage years.
