Teen girls and STDs

Is it really true that 1/4 of teen girls have an STD? I'm worried about my daughter, who's pre-teen now. How do I help to protect her?

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,
Yes the figure is correct (1 out of 4 girls have STD).  I even read an article claiming that the figure is actually higher.   The best you can do is talk to her, make her be aware to it....  Convince her teacher to raise that issue in class..... "Leave" some articles so she will "accidentally" see it....  But you won't be able to isolate (or insolate) totally from it.... (sorry, but that is the truth).  STD is a BIG problem today....
Best regards,

This is just another example of an overly permissive society. But there must be a way to protect our children and that is only through education, preferably from parents and if not from teachers. Teenagers have to be taught that sex can be dangerous if not handled correctly. It would be far better for teenagers to wait until they are more mature and know the price to be paid in terms of health and responsibilities. It is not easy because of suggestive advertising, movies, TV programs and especially peer pressure.

Always know what you want.

Educate your daughter of the risks now. Don't wait for society/school/her friends to teach/explain it to her. Make sure she understands the information you're providing her; if you have to, use language that is appropriate to her developmental stage. Ask her questions and make sure she knows she doesn't have to be embarrassed to ask you questions. Have her see a gynecologist now so she's comfortable with talking to a professional and asking questions. Being open and honest with your daughter is the smartest thing you can do. That's what my mother did for my little sister (who is now 18 years old).

That figure seems high. I suppose it depends what you call an STD. For example, cold sores = herpes = std?

I would talk to your daughter about respecting herself and loving herself and keeping herself safe.

Condoms help, but they are not a guarantee. They can tear, and they can't prevent genital herpes and warts 100%. Explain to your daughter that the only way to be 100% safe is not to let her genitals come into contact with anyone else's, and not to kiss anyone who is visibly sick or has sores. (though you can still get mono from someone who is not visibly sick)

I am a Longs Drugs Store Historian) & I will help everyone who needs advice on: Relationship sittuations, Issues , many other things.

Actually the studies have show that it is really 1 / 22 half percent of the teen agers that are sexually active are more at risk at getting ( STD'S) -Since 2006 it has risen over the pireod of the two years even before the new year of 2008, It has not yet been shown or proven that there is a perventave thing to prevent it thus not having intercourse is one way but the sad thing is that many teens think that they are invisable to the point that they will not get hurt or any illness'es yet when they find out they have the thing it is too late to do anything about it , again there is no actual treatment for it to get rid of it when , if you or they have it.

Abstanance is one way not to get it that is not having sex till you are married with one you love , if the truely love you.
