Technology in the classroom

I am a college student studying the integration of technology into the classroom. I am wondering how you (teachers) use technology and if it helps? What do the students enjoy most?

My fifth graders use lap top computers daily in a multitude of ways to aid their learning. They use technology to practice, reinforce, extend, and assess their learning through projects  and other assignments that they research and create with software, a network connection, and technology. Technology motivates my students and keeps them aware of the global society in which they live. They prepare projects for their classroom community as well as the web; their global community. Students are able to learn in a real time setting while practicing authentic learning skills and critical thinking behaviors in creative engaging activities.

I've never asked them what their favorite thing about having technology in their classroom is. Being kids, they would probably say having access to approved online games during earned free time.  If directed to specifically answer about their favorite thing about using technology in the classroom, I think you would hear things about using the computer for research as opposed to the "old fashioned" way of using encyclopedias. With just a few keystrokes, you can have pages of hits related to your questions. Of course, the students don't know the many lessons of preparation that go into the understanding of skim and scan and choosing appropriate responses from among those responses. How do we know what is "good" information, etc. When you read the encyclopedia, you were relatively sure of you information! Those are our new and more evolved discussions about how our thinking must change; particularly when we use technology to access data and create projects with accurate information.

I think using a touch board is quite useful. It can really help make your lessons much more relevant to todays students.

I went through a MAT program several years ago that emphasized technology.  The area school districts were hesitant, and so most of our field experiences were varied when it came to applying technology in the classroom.  The districts

were extremely interested in literacy and reading comprehension, though, so I tuned into that for my grad thesis.  Working with district literacy coaches during my cohort year, I found ways to use interactive technology (like SmartBoards) to increase reading comprehension.  I'd use a SmartBoard to start out lessons with visual representations of the text, and proceed with vocabulary building exercises.  The kids had fun, and  - thanks to help from the district lit coaches in developing lesson plans - reading comp scores went up, especially among ELL.  That was three years ago.  Now I use technology all the time, particularly for reading comp and to help students understand difficult ideas. I think they're great tools and they can make a difference in the classroom. BTW, you can find quite a bit of research using SmartBoards out there - check ERIC, of course, and search engines like Google Scholar.

My kids enjoy doing collaborative projects with classes from around the globe. The young ones love the idea of having epals and exchanging e-mails. The older ones love making PowerPoint/ video presentations or podcasts and exchanging them. They both enjoy blogging or using programs like yackpack or skype. We've got an internet magazine and they're very happy to write for it and edit it. I also use PowerPoint and other sotwares for making various class activities.

I hope this was helpful.
