Sign up for a professional society associated with the type of engineering you do. These societies usually offer a wide range of "professional intelligence" from very academic research to the more practically applied stuff.
In chemical engineering, I was a member of the AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers). There are similar bodies in many other countries.
In IT this is often the ACM (assoc of computing machinery), though they tend to be rather academic. Or the IEEE, which has hundreds of interest groups.
