Teaching self defence at school

My niece was taught "street smart" self defence in Grade 9. What she took from it was to yell STOP! when someone followed her to make him halt and give her a chance to run away. She was also taught to try and stab someone with her keys when they grab her.

Do you believe that self defence techniques should be taught in the school . If so at what age or grade do you think it is important?

Taught yes, but bring in someone capable of doing it properly, not just giving a teacher a 30 minute how to teach it video and letting them go.

Yes I do I think 9th grade may be a little young but I think they should be able to handle it. Problem is many times that age group doesn't think anything can happen to them.

Ninth or tenth grade, I think, would be a good age to teach self defense. However, my problem is that there isn't enough ground techniques being taught in self defense classes. You see it all the time, their stand up may be good, but something happens and both people are on the ground and the person who's being attacked doesn't know what to do, especially if they are on the bottom.

Learning the "reality" of life is very important.  Danger is out there and children need to become aware.

So, whilst I don't expect a child to be a martial artist, I do think using the formalised and disciplined way "good" martial arts brings understanding to light in kids is excellent.

I think high school aged kids should learn some simple self defense moves and tactics.  Definitely by college.  You have to be able to handle yourself.
