I'm STILL waiting for Gilad Shalit to come home!!

Go Israel!

Teaching Israeli culture

I'm teaching a class this fall called "Digesting Hebrew" where I will be teaching about Israel using different cultural foods and using Hebrew words. The class will be for 7th and 8th graders once a week for 1 hour. Any suggestions on what types of foods are important in Israel's culture and how I can tie them into Israel's history? I figured I'd start with humus, falafel, pita and israeli salad. But I'm not sure where to go from there.

You could teach a class on what it means to be kosher. Take them on a field trip to a kosher deli or meat shop.

Hi Linda. Thanks for writing. I actually have access to a kosher kitchen where the class is taught. The principal has mentioned that I need to think cheap. So field trips are not likely a possibility. But thank you anyways.

To say nothing, especially when speaking, is half the art of diplomacy.

There is a biblical landscape reserve in Israel called Neot Kedumim. They have a program called Meals from the Bible. I used to be a tour guide and this was a great place to learn about history, nature, and the Bible for both tourists and Israeli students. I think you will find this very useful for your students.

sounds like a lot of fun. may i ask what is "israeli salad" i think making challah would be a lifeskill that would be easy, and useful. especially now-with the bird twist on top!

such as cool class idea! I would do jachnun or malawach and teachabout the diversity of Israel through its cuisine.Like these morrocan and yemen treats!
