Taxol/herceptin side effects..

I don't have a particular question.  I am in the midst of herceptin treatment for breast cancer (after completing taxol two months ago).  This is my second diagnosis of breast cancer since 2002 (first time was dcis), this time the diagnosis was widespread invasive dcis with microinvasive cells.  I have some side effects with Taxol - primarily a severe neuropathy in feet which has lessened considerably when my doctor lowered my taxol dose.  I am doing a lot of alternative supplments for energy, neuropathy, pain.  The one piece that's been baffling is that I've developed intermittent severe pain in joints/muscles - where ever since stopping the Taxol.  Didn't expect that.  Anyway, any insights would be welcome.  Thanks.

Taxol is a prescription medication used for the treatment of certain cancers, including Metastic and Non-Metastic Breast Cancer. Taxol works by attacking cancer cells in your body and causing them to break down. Because Taxol is associated with certain unpleasant side effects such as difficulty breathing and irregular heart rate, it is sometimes necessary for your doctor to provide an alternative to Taxol.

  1. Dosage
  2. Unless you are prescribed an alternative medication, it is important that you continue to take Taxol exactly as it was prescribed by your physician. Do not skip or miss a dose of Taxol. If you forget to take your dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not double up on this medication, as it could cause symptoms of overdose to appear. Symptoms of Taxol overdose include feeling numb, tingly, or having flu-like symptoms (fever, chills) sores in the mouth or bleeding for unknown reasons.
  3. Reactions
  4. Some severe side effects are associated with Taxol, including any type of allergic reaction similar to itchy skin rash or hives, rapid or difficulty breathing, feeling faint, oral swelling (includes the face, lips or throat). Seek emergency medical care if you experience severe side effects as a result of taking Taxol. If you experience other side effects, such as flu-like symptoms (fever, chills), slow heartbeat, feeling numb in your hands or feet, call your doctor right away.
  5. Alternatives
  6. Negative reactions to Taxol are not uncommon. For those experiencing side effects as a result of Taxol, it is possible for your doctor to alter your dosage or provide an alternative medication to treat your Breast Cancer. Alternatives to Taxol include Tamoxifen, which is often prescribed to combat Breast Cancer. Femara is prescribed for women who suffer from Breast Cancer and are past the menopausal period. Paclitaxel is also prescribed for Breast Cancer, both Metastatic and Non-Metastatic, as well as for Ovarian Cancer. Herceptin is prescribed for Metastatic and Non-Metastatic Breast Cancers, and is able to slow the growth of cancer cells in the body. Letrozole treats all types of Breast Cancer, particularly those in post-menopausal women and Novaldex is available for the treatment of Breast Cancer as well. All alternatives to Taxol have been associated with various side effects. Your doctor should be able to determine which alternative is right for you based upon which side effects you have been experiencing.
  7. Interactions
  8. Whether you are prescribed Taxol or an alternative medication, certain breast cancer medications can interfere with other prescription medications or medical conditions you may have. It is important to discuss your full medical history with your doctor before taking any medication for your Breast Cancer. Tell your doctor about all of the medications you are taking, whether they are prescription or over-the-counter. Be sure to mention any drug allergies to your doctor before taking any medication for your breast cancer.
  9. Avoid
  10. Avoid crowds or interaction with groups of people or persons who have colds or any cold-like symptoms as much as possible. Follow your doctor's instructions with regard to any special diets or exercise routines while taking Taxol, or any of the other alternative medications your doctor feels is appropriate for you. http://boardreader.com/sp/HER2_Support_Group_Forums_335869.html
