Tagging best practices

I'm tagging my blogposts and my diigo.com highlights and bookmarks.
I would like others to easily find and benefit from my research.

How do I determine the most *popular* tags for a given subject?

Specifically, Is it better to use conjoined words (socialweb), dashes (social-web) or spaces ("social web")

I don't have a definitive answer but note articles 5 and 6 on this "Thirteen tips for effective tagging" guide, gives some guidelines for considering when tagging.

You can got to common bookmarking tools (like del.icio.us) and try to find your topics. Most of the tools offer a list of related tags.

Moreover http://quintura.com/ is a tag-cloud search engine. Have a look at common tags/words "close" to your topic.

Regarding with or w/o underscore, I have no definite answer. The issue is that some tools cannot work with spaces, thus they are substituted by underscores.

Same issue as for file/folder names and spaces regarding URL-autoformat in tools like MS Outlook.
